Wandies come up short

Wandies come up short

Adam McFarlane12 Mar 2012 - 12:26

Wandies returned from Langholm with only 2 league points thanks to a late spirited fightback from the home team snatching a drop goal at the death of the game

Saturday saw Murrayfield travel to the 'Muckle Toon' with the knowledge that if they secured a win whilst Kilmarnock failed to register a point, promotion would be secured and Wandies would again enjoy the dizzy heights of the restructured Premier 3.

With the kick off time brought forward 30 minutes to allow both teams to watch the Scotland match on the TV, it was a rushed effort to get everyone out and warmed up prior to kick off. Never the less, Wandies began proceedings kicking off towards the town and began the way they had of late putting huge pressure on their smaller forward counterparts. A lineout on the 5 metre line formed a rolling maul which held strong allowing Johnny Lyons to score his eighth try of the season 0-5. Six minutes later, quick ball along the back division allowed Murray Johnstone - playing on the wing today - to chip the last defender and win the footrace to score a well worked try in the corner 0-10.

This was perhaps the moment where more focus was required from the visitors. Instead you would be forgiven for thinking that Wandies had assumptions this game was going to be a carbon copy of the previous week where tries were flying in left right and centre. A rude awakening was about to be had though when a well worked move from the base of the Langholm scrum allowed their strong running stand off to glide over in the corner 5-10. Craig de Leeuw, making his debut for the 1st XV, suffered a nightmare start to his senior squad appearance when an awkward tackle left the youngster clutching at his knee in agony and requiring a trip to the hospital. With a reshuffle in the pack, the game got underway again, but not the way the visitors wanted. Johnny Lyons was shown a yellow card for killing the ball at the breakdown following an earlier team warning from the ref. The penalty kick was taken reducing the gap 8-10. A penalty was awarded to Murrayfield shortly after which Murray Johnstone happily slotted to increase the lead to 8-13. Before the game was to change ends at half time, Langholm turned up the heat and clinched a late try which was converted to give the home team the lead 15-13.

Half Time score 15-13.

Two minutes in to the 2nd half, the visitors were restored to their full compliment when Johnny Lyons returned to the pitch after his spell in the sin bin. This addition to the numbers obviously boosted Wandies efforts which allowed Alex Cox to take a share of the spoils for the day 15-20. A dropped ball from the restart however allowed Langholm to get another foothold in the Wandies half and through a neat inside pass from the fly half he released the Langholm player through a gap on his way to the try line 22-20.

Yellow cards again crept back into Wandies performances and following a Langholm player's dispatching into the Sin Bin, 2nd Rower Adam Gillies was sent to join him before Langholm were invited to stretch their lead further 25-20. With the sands of time running in favour of the home team, Murrayfield suddenly rediscovered their spark and streaked up the park allowing Arran Richards to sprint over in front of the vociferous home support. The conversion looked to be going to the dogs when the ball fell off the tee on Muzza's approach, however the wee man managed to pick it up and drop kick it under pressure to add the additional two points 25-27.

With Adam Gillies returning to the field and Wandies fielding the restart, perhaps the forwards should have closed out this game there and then. Instead, the ball was kicked up field in to touch where Langholm won their own line out. What can only be described as a barrage of forward runners allowed the home team to march from their own 22 to the 22 metre line at the other end of the field. Once there, the ball was fed to the kicker who, despite the efforts of the defence, split the uprights to take 3 points and win the game by a single point at the final whistle.

Final Score 28-27.

Next week will see Murrayfield host the Edinburgh Shield Final against a strong Musselburgh side keen to win the double this season. With this fixture going 2-0 to the visitors already this season, the pressure is on to reverse this and prolong our shield journey at least to the following week.
