There has been much said in the last few days about the sad passing of Lord Campbell. However, there has been very little concerning his love of rugby.
His very nickname came from his school days (Hillhead Secondary) where his rugby teammates referred to him as “Ming on the wing”.
He loved his rugby, but injuries meant that he would have to stop playing while still a teenager, if he was going to do justice to his potential speed on the track and become Britain’s fastest runner.
It was only when his international career as a sprinter came to an end that he was able to renew his love of running with the oval ball.
His contribution on the Wanderers wing took him all the way to Twickenham Sevens and the 1969 final. It meant so much to him that the photograph attached was included in his excellent autobiography.
Those who had the pleasure to know him will miss him.
